What is a kick plate?

A kick plate is a wide, low protective plate fitted to the bottom of a door, guarding the timber against scuffs, scrapes and impact damage from feet, trolleys, prams and other equipment. Doors in busy commercial and communal areas take a lot of low-level knocks over time, and a kick plate takes that wear instead of the door itself, which is far cheaper to replace or clean than repairing or repainting a damaged door face.

Kick plates are sold in a range of standard widths and heights to suit different door sizes, and can be fitted to one or both sides of a door depending on how it is used.

Where kick plates are used

• Commercial and communal doors – offices, schools and shops see kick plates fitted as standard on doors in busy areas
• Care homes and healthcare buildings – where doors are frequently opened using wheelchairs, trolleys or hospital beds
• Kitchens and utility areas – domestic kick plates protect doors from scuffs in busy household areas
• Fire doors – kick plates are often specified as part of a fire door set to protect the door face without compromising the door's rating

Choosing the right kick plate

A few practical points are worth checking before you buy:

• Width and height – kick plates should be sized to suit your door's width, with height chosen based on how much protection is needed

• Fire door compatibility – if fitting to a fire door, check the kick plate is compatible with that door's fire rating
• One or both sides – doors that are kicked open from both directions may benefit from a kick plate on each face
