Black bathroom mortice lock, an example of an internal privacy lock

Black 2½" Bathroom Mortice Lock, from our current range.

What is a bathroom lock?

A bathroom lock is a mortice lock designed specifically for internal privacy doors such as bathrooms and WCs. Instead of a key, it is operated by a turn and release mechanism, usually a small knob or button, which locks the door from inside while allowing anyone outside to release it in an emergency using a coin or small tool, an important safety feature if someone is unwell or a child locks themselves in.

Bathroom locks are typically supplied with matching turn and release furniture, sometimes as part of a wider door furniture set alongside a knob or handle.

Where bathroom locks are used

  • Bathrooms and WCs – the primary application, providing privacy without a key
  • En-suites – used in the same way, particularly where family members share access
  • Changing rooms and similar spaces – also used in commercial or leisure settings needing simple, key-free privacy locking

Choosing the right bathroom lock

A few practical points are worth checking before you buy:

  • Emergency release – check the turn and release furniture allows release from outside in an emergency
  • Case size – commonly 2½", matched to your door and any existing mortice
  • Matching furniture – pair with a knob, lever handle or privacy turn in the same finish

Frequently asked questions

Can a bathroom door be unlocked from outside in an emergency?

Yes, bathroom locks are designed with an emergency release, usually operated with a coin or flat tool through a small slot on the outside of the turn and release furniture.

Do I need a mortice lock for a bathroom, or is a simple bolt enough?

A dedicated bathroom mortice lock is generally a better long-term choice than a simple slide bolt, since it provides a more secure fixing and the emergency release feature.

What comes included with a bathroom lock?

This varies by product, but many bathroom locks are sold with matching turn and release furniture, sometimes as part of a full door furniture set.
