What is a euro cylinder?

A euro cylinder, or euro profile cylinder, is the lock mechanism fitted into most uPVC, composite and some timber doors, operated by a key on one or both sides and connected internally to a multi-point locking mechanism. Unlike a traditional mortice lock, the cylinder itself is a simple, replaceable component, while the locking gear that engages the frame sits separately inside the door.

Cylinders are rated to different security grades, with anti-snap and anti-pick certified versions increasingly the recommended standard, since standard euro cylinders were historically a common weak point exploited by "lock snapping" break-ins.

Where euro cylinders are used

• uPVC and composite doors – the standard lock mechanism on almost all modern uPVC and composite front and back doors
• Multi-point locking systems – the cylinder operates the gearbox that drives hooks and bolts around the frame
• Communal and rental doors – cylinders can be quickly and affordably replaced when re-keying between tenants

Choosing the right euro cylinder

A few practical points are worth checking before you buy:

• Size – euro cylinders are measured in two halves from the centre of the fixing screw to each end (for example 30/40mm); measure your existing cylinder before ordering
• Anti-snap rating – look for a cylinder tested to resist snapping, a common method used to force uPVC door locks
• Thumbturn option – a thumbturn cylinder allows quick exit from inside without a key
• Keyed alike – useful where several doors on a property should open with the same key

How do I measure my euro cylinder?

Remove the cylinder and measure each half from the centre of the fixing screw hole to the end of that half, giving you two measurements such as 30mm and 40mm, usually written as 30/40.

What is lock snapping?

Lock snapping is a technique used to force weaker euro cylinders by snapping them at their narrowest point to access the mechanism. Anti-snap rated cylinders are designed to resist this.

Can I replace a euro cylinder myself?

Yes, in most cases a euro cylinder can be replaced with basic tools once the correct size is confirmed, without needing to replace the whole lock mechanism.
