Window furniture is often the detail that gives away a property's age, and the detail that period renovators care most about getting right. Casement, sash and fanlight windows each use different hardware, and the terminology can be confusing if you have not come across it before. This guide sets out the main types.

• Window Handles – the general term for the handle used to open and close a casement window

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a casement fastener and an espagnolette handle?

A casement fastener simply pulls the window shut against a single strike plate. An espagnolette handle operates a locking bar with several points down the window, giving a more secure, weathertight close – typical on taller casement windows.

How do I know what size window stay I need?

Window stays are measured by their length and the number of holes for the stay pin. Measuring your existing stay, or the window opening if replacing from scratch, is the easiest way to get this right – contact us if you would like help.

Do window restrictors affect ventilation?

No – most restrictors are designed to still allow a window to open enough for ventilation while limiting the full opening, and many can be released fully in an emergency.
