What is an espagnolette handle?

An espagnolette handle, often shortened to "espag handle", operates a locking bar that runs the full height of a casement window, engaging multiple points along the frame rather than a single strike plate. Turning the handle drives the bar up or down, locking the window firmly along its length in one motion. This gives a more secure, weathertight close than a simple casement fastener, and is why espagnolette handles are the standard choice on taller period casement windows.
