Black and satin brass are two of the most requested door handle finishes we sell, and for very different reasons. Black gives a strong, contemporary contrast against most door colours, while satin brass offers a warm, understated look that has become the modern alternative to polished brass. Neither is objectively better, it depends on the look you want and the practicalities of your home.

Black door handles

• Look – a strong, matt, contemporary finish that works well against light or dark doors alike, and suits both period and modern properties
• Maintenance – a good quality black finish, such as powder coating, resists marking well, though fingerprints and light scuffs can show more than on a lighter finish
• Best suited to – contemporary interiors, painted period doors, and anywhere a strong contrast against the door colour is wanted

Satin brass door handles

• Look – a soft, low-sheen gold tone, warmer than chrome or nickel but without the high shine of polished brass
• Maintenance – the satin texture hides fingerprints and light wear better than a polished finish, and generally needs less regular cleaning
• Best suited to – contemporary and transitional interiors, and as a lower-maintenance alternative to polished brass in period homes

Which should I choose?

If your doors and skirting are painted in a strong or dark colour, black handles will generally stand out more clearly. If you want a warmer, more traditional tone without the upkeep of polished brass, satin brass is usually the better choice. Frequently asked questions

Does black finish door hardware fade or wear over time?

A good quality powder coated or PVD black finish is very durable, but as with any finish, high traffic areas can show light wear over many years. Avoid abrasive cleaners to keep the finish looking its best.

Is satin brass the same as antique or aged brass?

No. Satin brass is a lighter, more contemporary tone with a fine matt texture, while antique or aged brass has a deliberately darker, more distressed appearance suited to period properties. See our Antique Brass guide.

Can I mix black and satin brass in the same house?

Yes, many homes use different finishes in different rooms or zones. The main thing to avoid is mixing finishes on the same door, or within the same clear sightline, as this tends to look unintentional.
